The Church of Perpetual Life claims the nineteenth century philosopher Nikolai Fyodorov as one of its prophets. As a participant in the Transhumanist Council Philosophy Reading Group, I recently read and discussed some of his writings as translated in the book What Was Man Created For? The Philosophy of the Common Task. I also watched an animated documentary about Fyodorov, Morning Without Evening, using a link provided by the documentarian Beate Petersen which is available from her by email request.
Fyodorov was a Christian who proposed that we should all work together to use future science-based technologies to resurrect our ancestors for the purpose of saving them from Judgment Day. Fyodorov's Universal Salvation reminded me of the Mormon practice of proxy baptism. It also helped me connect the dots with the renaming of the Transhumanist Church to the Society for Universal Immortalism.
Our philosophy reading group is currently discussing Youniverse: Toward a Self-Centered Philosophy of Immortalism and Cryonics by R.C.W. Ettinger. Next we plan to discuss Forever for All: Moral Philosophy, Cryonics, and Rational Prospects for Immortality, Revised Edition by R. Michael Perry. Both of these works reference Fyodorov. If you would like to join us, please see the event invitations in the Meetup groups for Cryonics Community Dallas and the Dallas Area Transhumanist Association.
